21st Century Learners

We watched a video clip called A Vision of K-12 Students Today.  After viewing the video, you need to post a response to the content.  I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say.  I’m wondering what kinds of things you think teachers need to be doing in their classrooms to help prepare you for the world!!

Catherine, Called Birdy

Here’s the June vocabulary.  Remember to use each word in a quality sentence to show you know the meaning.

Catherine, Called Birdy Enrichment Activities

As we read through the novel, there will be opportunities to explore further some medieval culture/events that interest you.  Of course, you may choose something else entirely, but here’s a start:

1)  Look up Longshanks (King Edward I) and William Wallace <http://www.highlanderweb.co.uk/wallace/index.html> (Braveheart).

2)  Research castles.  Design your own.  Construct a model.

3)  Why were the Jews expelled from England?

4)  In the chapter “December”, Catherine attends a hanging.  Does punishment like this exist anywhere in our world today?

Leave a comment if you are going to explore a different topic.

Happy Researching!

Travelogue

We’ve worked on descriptive writing and focussed on word choice for this assignment.  Everyone has chosen a place they’ve visited, created a traveloge, and incorporated it into a podcast with visuals.  Definitely worth checking out!

I’ve been doing some searching and trying to figure out how you can log into your learnerblogs.

Try just adding

/wp-login.php to the end of your learnerblog URL

Once you get logged in, make sure you go to PRESENTATIONS and then WIDGETS (from here, select META – this will provide you with a log in directly on your blog (instead of logging into learnerblogs.org) Hope this helps!

Good Luck!

Comments on the Freak

Your assignment is to visit the blogs of your classmates (you must first go to the names you picked, after you complete that task, you may comment on any other classmate’s blog) and do the following:

**  Log in to your blog first!**

1)  Read their response to the novel The Freak.

2)  Provide feedback on their response -

        -  let them know about the quality of their response overall – did they include everything they were supposed to? (title/author/brief summary, used response leads and provides evidence, is it a quality response??)

- agree or disagree with their response and give reasons why

**Do not leave an anonymous post….take responsibility for your feedback!!

Be honest and fair!

The Freak

We’ve just finished reading The Freak by Carol Matas.  We had the unique opportunity to meet with Carol, via her blog, to discuss the writing process as she begins work on the third book in the series.  We had a really great discussion, with some great questions from the class.

1)  Create a post on your blog about your thoughts on our meeting with Carol.  What went well?  What didn’t you like about it?  What would you change if we could do it again?  Be sure to include a link to our discussion.

2)  Create another post with your response to the book as a whole.  Use as many leads as you need to create a quality response.  Publish it to your blog in a category called “Assignments”.

Yay!! We’re blogging!!!

We’re off to a great start!

Here’s your task for today:

1)  email me the link to your blog, so I can add it to my blogroll (once I have everyone’s address, I’ll email them to you so you can add them to your blogroll as well!)

2) add my blog to your blogroll (you might want to add your blog link to your protopage)

3) create some type of welcome post for the world to read!

4) post your response to We All Fall Down and title that post “We All Fall Down Response”

5) start customizing your blog by checking out the Presentations tab

HAVE FUN!!
